Mr. Gopal Subramaniam

Mr. Gopal Subramaniam is a distinguished Indian lawyer and Senior Advocate at the Supreme Court of India, who was appointed as the Solicitor General of India, the second most important law officer of the country after the Attorney General, in 2009 at the age of 51. Subramaniam has represented the Centre in several high-voltage cases like Bihar assembly dissolution; defreezing of London bank accounts of Bofors case accused Ottavio Quattrocchi; and the cash-for-query scam. Apart from handling politically sensitive cases, he also helped the Supreme Court frame the Anti-ragging Code. Acting as amicus curiae in the case, he, alongwith the Raghavan Committee, suggested radical measures like expulsion of students found guilty of ragging and denial of any further admission. More importantly, Subramanium also appeared in the Delhi High Court and the Supreme Court as the Special Public Prosecutor in the Parliament attack case in which the trial court's verdict of awarding death sentence to Mohd Afzal was upheld.
